International Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID)WatSave Technology Award

Werner and Herbert Arns of Brazil, long-time Valley customers, were presented with the 2007 ICID WatSave Technology Award for their measurable conservation of water through the use of Valley center pivots in rice production. The ICID WatSave Award is granted annually to an individual or team who has exhibited an outstanding contribution to water conservation.

In 1999, Werner and Herbert Arns put 24 years of surface flooding behind them; they began to successfully grow rice via mechanized irrigation with a Valley center pivot.  Since then, the center pivot has not only allowed the Arnses to conserve more water during the temperate months of October and November, but also has led to increased water savings by 50%, decreasing production costs.  The Arnses have invested in three additional Valley center pivots and intend to purchase more in the coming years.  Use of Valley center pivots in the Arnses' 1600-hectare field allows for multiple crop rotations and a switch to minimum tillage crop production.
