Growers are being asked to produce more while using fewer resources. Efficient irrigation and water management can help growers maximize profits even as water restrictions get tighter.

Generally, water reporting regulations are dictated by the local water management district. “As I talk to growers, many of them who are not currently required to report think that reporting is coming in the near future,” says Aaron Caughey, Senior Product Manager for Valley® Irrigation.

For a few examples, Nebraska has 23 Natural Resource Districts. 20 of them require water usage reports. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources requires “collection and submission of specific information” for all wells that withdraw 500 gallons or more per minute from groundwater sources.

Currently, portions of 42 Kansas counties, especially in the western part of the state, are designated as Intensive Groundwater Use Control Areas. In these areas, the Chief Engineer can implement strict controls where groundwater is “declining excessively.”

The Solution to Increased Requirements

Part of this movement toward monitoring and restricting water use is because the ag sector is the primary consumer of ground and surface water in the United States. Agricultural applications account for around 80% of water use and more than 90% in some western states. Penalties for not accurately reporting water usage vary by state and water management district, but can include shutting down the well.

According to USDA Census information from 2013, there are 605,610 irrigation pumps in the United States that supply water for more than 55 million acres of irrigated land. But only 132,700 of those pumps – 22% – have flow meters.
